The first six of twelve Preludes are now complete.

The idea for this project originated from writing pieces that featured interlocking rhythmic ostinato parts in both hands of the piano. It's a feature of Balinese Gamelan music, utilized by modern composers such as Steve Reich and Lou Harrison, and can be heard often in the improvisations of pianist Keith Jarrett. Not every prelude in this series will utilize this feature, but it was a jumping off point for discovering cyclical, self-contained pieces that move through various tonal centers.

Although the pieces were written and conceived on the piano by pianist Gary Fukushima, these preludes have been reimagined to account for the broader influences of drummer Miles Senzaki and bassist JP Maramba, particularly in the areas of groove. Essentially, the idea is to take complex harmonic and rhythmic structures and attempt to make them as funky as possible.

It is impossible to overstate the connection to how this music sounds with its producer, Jens Kuross. The jazz drummer turned keyboardist-singer-songwriter supplied the core vision for virtually all the timbral decisions across all the preludes. The music simply wouldn't sound the way it does without his ears and insight.
